Sports Direct/Heatons is one of Ireland’s leading sportswear retail companies and it is a testament to our consistent and continued quality service delivery that MDE has been retained by Heatons Ltd for over 15 years providing services for 57 outlets.
This work has involved delivering mechanical and electrical service to approximately 15,000 ft.² of retail floor space per store. The majority of stores remained fully operational throughout our works.
During this time we provided Heatons with design and build services along with preventative and planned maintenance services.
Our work was delivered to tight deadlines within a specified timeframe to meet our client’s requirements time and again. It demonstrated the importance of a highly valued relationship built on trust and delivery.
As part of a major environmental project by Marks & Spencer UK to reduce their overall carbon footprint, we were appointed as the Electrical Company of choice for a series of works in Ireland and the UK.
We were contracted to deliver a complete energy-saving programme to Marks & Spencer stores in Cork, Dublin, Leeds, Worthing, Manchester, and Newcastle.
All work was carried out outside of normal working hours on live sites. Each project met programme requirements and was delivered within budget.
We worked in partnership with various energy consultants to achieve the Marks & Spencer Carbon Footprint target.
This electrical project for the new LIDL store in Shankill, Dublin 18 was completed by MDE in early 2019. This new store was particularly challenging as it was a phased build, due to the requirement to re-locate an existing pharmacy during the build. This was a Single storey building comprising Sales Floor, Offices & Welfare Areas, Storage Areas c/w Loading Bay, Refrigeration, I.T. Suite, and Plant Areas. The store also had an External Car Park as well as an ‘under-croft’ car park beneath the building.
MDE provided a complete M&E service on this project including a State-of-the-art LED lighting system, BEMS, Structured Cabling Installation, Heating and Ventilation, Air Conditioning, E-Vehicle Charging Stations, M&E Controls and all associated General Power.
Throughout the contract, as with all of MDE’s contracts, Health, Safety & Quality remained at the forefront of all discussions and meetings – especially when planning new tasks or altering existing plans to facilitate other interested parties. With MDE’s site supervisors holding regular toolbox talks and our management carrying out regular site audits, we can be sure that a HSE&Q culture is ingrained in the thinking of our entire team.
This new store was built adjacent to LIDL’s existing Nenagh store and was a typical ‘Type13’ store i.e. Single storey comprising Sales Floor, Offices & Welfare Areas, Storage Areas c/w Loading Bay, Refrigeration, I.T. Suite, Plant Areas and External Car Park.

Working to a tight deadlines, MDE executed comprehensive Programme of Works for each project allowing for the key milestones to be met whilst not compromising on the quality of the workmanship throughout.

Project challenges at a glance
The new Lidl store in Drogheda features a number of eco-friendly characteristics that reduce its environmental impact. These include a natural refrigeration system, LED lighting and sustainably sourced wooden building materials.
The site also features free electric vehicle charging stations for customers and renewable, solar and wind-powered car park lighting, all requiring specialist electrical skills and expertise.
MDE Team were chosen to complete the mechanical, electrical, and ventilation services in the 2,906sq m store. Our experience and ability ensured that this was the first Lidl store in the country with many of these impressive new features and is part of the ongoing effort by them to meet the many targets set out in their Origin Green sustainability plan.
The new Lidl at the East Wall in central Dublin is located in a new mixed-use development. The 19,500 sq ft shop is considered one of Lidl’s leading stores in Dublin because of its superb design and fit out.
Working on this complex new build project, our entire MDE team clearly demonstrated their experience in working in partnership with other contractors. We were contracted to install mechanical, electrical and ventilation installation services in two blocks totaling 6,258sq m (67,360sq ft) on a 0.9-hectare site.
The first block, fronting East Wall Road and Church Road, comprises four stories arranged around a 118-space rear car park. The ground floor provided 1,980sq m (21,313sq ft) for Lidl. Above the store, there is a gym and two floors of offices. The second block of two storeys included a drive-through restaurant of 655sq m (7,050sq ft), a shop, and office space.
This prestigious project enabled our management and site personnel to demonstrate their ability to complete on time and within budget.
Our fast track fit out of Lidl in Tallaght incorporated new design concepts including new mechanical, electrical, and ventilation and installation services.
This challenging project took 12 weeks to complete all within a busy functioning store, demonstrating the ability of our management and site personnel to complete such a project on time and within budget.
Given our track record and experience, we were able to continue work without disruption to the Lidl store, its staff, customers, or service.

The LIDL Store in Connswater is now the company’s largest retail location in Northern Ireland, and one of 38 stores across the province. Its modern fit-out offers customers superior shopping experience.

We enjoyed the challenge of completing the project on time and on budget within 12 weeks in a big city centre location in coordination with other contractors.
This project involved the demolition of the existing Lidl Foodstore on the Andersonstown Road in Belfast and the adjacent vacant retail unit to create a larger extended store, as well as all associated works to reconfigure the carpark and store access.
We were commissioned as the mechanical, electrical and ventilation contractor. We were working in a live site with high level health and safety requirements and we ensured there were no disruptions to customers.
These are working conditions in which we are highly experienced and have developed considerable project management experience.
We completed the project on time and within budget without any defects or snags.
