About:
MDE Installations Ltd are seeking Substation Technicians to join our dynamic and growing team. This is a fantastic opportunity for experienced individuals to work on high-profile projects across London, Scotland (Mainland and Islands), and beyond. Travel and accommodation are fully covered, and additional training is provided where required.

The Role:
As a Substation Technician, you’ll be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground power infrastructure. You’ll play a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of transmission systems, while working to the highest industry safety standards.

Location:
Primarily London, with required travel to Scotland (Mainland and Islands)
Travel and accommodation provided.

Hours of work:
Full-time, Monday to Friday
Work location: In person

Qualifications:

  • Cat 1a – Entry to ground-mounted distribution substations (up to 11kV)

  • Cat 2d – Accompanying Person for LV live working

  • Full UK driving licence (or equivalent)

Responsibilities:

  • Install, maintain, and repair overhead and underground power lines

  • Erect and repair poles, crossarms, insulators, transformers, and other line equipment

  • String electrical conductors on towers and poles

  • Perform live-line work in line with safety protocols (if certified)

  • Inspect equipment for signs of wear or damage

  • Use and maintain hydraulic tools, bucket trucks, and climbing equipment

  • Follow electrical blueprints and technical diagrams

  • Complete emergency repairs and assist with power restoration

  • Ensure compliance with health & safety and industry standards

Essential requirements:

  • Proven experience as an electrical linesman or substation technician

  • Good understanding of electricity distribution systems

  • Comfortable working at heights and outdoors in various weather conditions

  • Skilled in using line tools, climbing gear, and testing equipment

  • Strong safety awareness and compliance mindset

  • Ability to work both independently and in a team

  • Willingness to travel across the UK as needed

Desirable requirements:

  • Additional certifications for live-line working or substation access

  • Experience working under authorised documentation (e.g., LOA)
