Substation Pole & Equipment Technician
About:
MDE Installations Ltd are hiring experienced and qualified Substation Pole & Equipment Technicians to join our growing team. This is a field-based role covering multiple regions in the UK, ideal for candidates with strong experience in LV networks and substation equipment. Travel and accommodation are fully covered, with additional training provided as required.
The Role:
You will play a key role in the installation, maintenance, and commissioning of LV monitoring devices and network infrastructure at substations and pole-mounted sites. This includes live working, switching operations, fault finding, and supervising work parties under safety protocols such as LOAs.
Location:
Scotland (Mainland and Islands) & Southern Region of England
Travel and accommodation provided.
Hours of work:
Full-time, Monday to Friday
Qualifications:
Candidates must hold or be eligible to obtain the following:
Cat 1a – Entry to ground-mounted substations (up to 11kV)
Cat 1c – Entry to substations with exposed conductors
Cat 2a – Supervision under LOA
Cat 2d – Accompanying Person for LV live working
Cat 4b – Work on live underground mains cables and terminations
Cat 4c – Work on live overhead mains conductors and terminations
Cat 4e – Work in live LV panels (including metering secondary wiring)
Cat 4g – LV supply point testing
Cat 4h – Testing of LV systems only
Cat 5c/d – LV switching on overhead and underground networks
Responsibilities:
Supervise work parties under LOA safety documentation
Act as Accompanying Person for live LV work
Install and commission LV monitoring devices at substations and pole sites
Perform inspections, testing, and commissioning of connections and upgrades
Maintain accurate records of installations and device returns
Install, maintain, and repair LV overhead and underground networks
Perform live and dead service joints and terminations
Conduct LV switching operations as authorised
Replace and re-commission faulty equipment
Complete progress reports and project documentation
Attend client meetings and provide technical updates
Essential requirements:
Experience on LV distribution networks (overhead and underground)
Electrical safety knowledge and live working competency
Familiarity with commissioning software and LV monitoring devices
Strong problem-solving and technical troubleshooting skills
Full UK driving licence (or equivalent)
Willingness to travel throughout the UK
Desirable requirements:
Experience working in substation environments
Prior authorisations with DNOs or IDNOs
Comfortable working at heights and in field-based roles
