MDE's Role in Ireland’s Smart Metering Success and Carbon Reduction

MDE has played a crucial role in advancing Ireland’s carbon reduction and renewable energy goals through its involvement in the National Smart Metering Programme. Working in partnership with ESB Networks, MDE has contributed to the installation of almost 2 million smart meters across homes, farms, and businesses in Ireland. These smart meters are transforming energy management by providing real-time data, enabling more efficient energy use, and supporting Ireland’s transition to a low-carbon energy system.
During a recent visit to the ESB headquarters in Dublin, Ioannis Tsakiris, Vice President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), praised the partnership between the EIB and ESB. He highlighted the importance of investments like the €450 million provided by the EIB to support the National Smart Metering Programme. This funding is vital for reducing carbon emissions and enhancing the use of renewable energy across Ireland.

Vice President Tsakiris noted the significant progress of the programme, which is now transforming how nearly 2 million Irish households, farms, and businesses manage their energy use. By offering detailed consumption data, smart meters help consumers shift to more efficient energy tariffs, monitor usage patterns, and reduce overall consumption.

Paul Stapleton, Chief Financial Officer of ESB, emphasised the critical role of smart meters in achieving Ireland’s renewable energy goals. “EIB funding has been instrumental in delivering a more flexible, responsive energy system for Ireland,” he said. “Smart meters enable better use of Ireland’s renewable resources, empower consumers to reduce carbon emissions, and enhance their ability to manage energy use effectively.”

Tsakiris also remarked, “The EIB is proud to support the National Smart Metering Programme, which represents a significant step forward in Ireland’s energy transition. This partnership reflects our commitment to investing in projects that drive the decarbonisation of Europe’s energy sector.”

The National Smart Metering Programme is a key component of Ireland’s broader energy strategy, aiming to meet ambitious climate targets, enhance grid flexibility, and integrate a growing share of renewable energy sources into the national grid. As smart meters become more widespread, they will continue to drive the transition to cleaner energy, helping consumers reduce their carbon footprints and making the grid more adaptable to renewable sources.

MDE’s involvement in this transformative project highlights its dedication to advancing Ireland’s energy transition and tackling climate change. Through its contributions to the National Smart Metering Programme, MDE is helping to build an energy system that fosters sustainability and supports renewable energy.
